Ottawa Tamil Association Urges Singapore to Help Deliver Justice Regarding the Genocide Against Eelam Tamils

We kindly urge the government of Singapore to take immediate action to arrest former Sri Lankan president Mr. Rajapakse for crimes of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

Ms. Daphne Hong Fan Sin,

Attorney-General’s Chambers, Government of Singapore

Dear Ms. Hong:

We kindly urge the government of Singapore to take immediate action to arrest former Sri Lankan president Mr. Rajapakse for crimes of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

In 2009, the Tamil diaspora raised worldwide awareness for a ceasefire between Tamil Eelam and Sri Lanka. As the war crimes took place in such a year, the United Nations should have called for an international tribunal against the Sri Lankan war criminals. Since such criminals were left free, in 2019, the Sinhala people elected Mr. Rajapakse as president, thus providing him immunity. Due to such decisions, Sri Lanka is currently bankrupt. Regardless, the Tamil Diaspora still continues to raise their voices for justice.

Lawyers from the International Truth and Justice Project have submitted a criminal complaint to the Attorney General of Singapore requesting the immediate arrest of former Sri Lankan President Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa for war crimes.

The success of Singapore is greatly due to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s efforts to provide equality for all the nation’s citizens. In an interview with the International Herald Tribune, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew stated, “[i]n 1965, we had 20 years of examples of failed states. So, we knew what to avoid – racial conflict, linguistic strife, religious conflict. We saw Ceylon. Thereafter, we knew that if we embarked on any of these romantic ideas to revive a mythical past of greatness and culture, we’d be damned.”

We urge the government of Singapore to stand for justice as they had in 1965 when the leader of Singapore reflected and took action upon the failure of Ceylon.
