Our gratitude to the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament for unanimously recognizing the Tamil Genocide by Sri Lanka

June 5, 2022 — On behalf of the Federation of Global Tamil Organizations (FGTO), we would like to wholeheartedly convey our gratitude to the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament for unanimously recognizing the Tamil Genocide by Sri Lanka and for recognizing May 18th as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. We thank the Hon. MP Gary Anandasangaree for bringing this important motion and each Member of Parliament, Canadian political parties, and the Canadian people including the Tamil Canadian community for this recognition, and we sincerely hope this is the first step towards justice, and non-recurrence.

The UN’s Petrie report admitted to the failure of UN policy in Sri Lanka in 2009. In 2015, the Northern provincial council unanimously passed a genocide resolution. The Tamil people have been waiting for justice for the thousands of innocent Tamils that were mercilessly massacred by Sri Lanka. Thousands more are missing. Since the de-facto state of Tamil Eelam was destroyed and the Sri Lankan military fully occupied the Tamil homeland, Sri Lanka has been systematically involved in land grabs for building Sinhalese settlements and Buddhist temples with the intent of changing the demography of the Tamils’ traditional homeland. The Tamils are losing their homeland at an alarming rate at the moment.

On behalf of the Eelam Tamils and Tamil diaspora, we call upon Canada and the International Community for the following:

  1. An Internationally Monitored Referendum for the Eelam Tamils and the Diaspora to determine their Permanent Political Solution.
  2. An Interim Governing Mechanism for the Eelam Tamils to govern and protect themselves and their lands, until the Referendum is held.
  3. The referral of the situation in Sri Lanka to (1) the International Criminal Court (ICC) with respect to genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, and crimes of aggression and apartheid; and (2) legal action against Sri Lanka before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the Convention against Torture, and crimes of aggression and apartheid.
