FGTO Expresses Gratitude to Canada for Recognizing Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day and Sanctioning Former Sri Lankan Presidents

December 22, 2023 — The following was sent to all the Canadian MPs and MPPs by FGTO.

Season’s Greetings! Wishing you a Merry Christmas! and a prosperous New Year!

The year 2023 marks a significant milestone for Canadian Tamils and the global Tamil diaspora, as Canada has emerged as a beacon of hope and leadership in the quest for justice. Since 2009, the Tamil diaspora and Eelam Tamils have been advocating for justice for the genocide perpetrated by the Sri Lankan government. We are deeply grateful for Canada’s decisive actions, notably the unanimous adoption of the Tamil genocide motion by Canadian MPs in 2022 and the Ontario parliament’s establishment of Tamil Genocide Education Week in 2021. Your commitment to bring Sri Lanka to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its genocidal crimes is highly commendable, and we eagerly anticipate Canada’s continued leadership in 2024.

We would also like to bring to your attention a concerning development within our community. The Federation of Global Tamil Organizations (FGTO) denounces the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) for its recent engagement with the Sri Lankan government, including the sanctioned genocide perpetrator, Mahinda Rajapaksa. As reported by the Ottawa Tamil Association to Canadian Foreign Affairs on December 5, 2021, the credibility of CTC is questionable. It is crucial to remain vigilant against any entities that may hinder the pursuit of justice for the Tamil genocide.

Furthermore, we commend the British Tamils for urging their parliament to sanction Sri Lankan war criminals, exemplifying the global Tamil community’s unwavering commitment to justice. The FGTO, alongside other Tamil organisations, continues to tirelessly advocate for legal accountability for Sri Lanka’s crimes of genocide.

Our member organizations extend our heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support and look forward to further collaboration in the upcoming year.

Warm regards,

Federation of Global Tamil Organizations (FGTO) – https://fgto.org/
